It has also been decided in the UEFA headquarters that the prize money for the lower-tier competition Europa League should be increased. Should the Serbian champions miss out on the opportunity to enter the Champions League group stage, their push as far as the play-off round would guarantee them a place in the Europa League, and with it further €1m. Every win in this competition will be worth €40,000, while teams will be awarded half as much for a draw. A place in the last 32 will be rewarded with €200,000. The teams that get past the first round of the spring season will get €300,000, those that reach the quarter-final will earn €400,000, while the four semi-finalists will get €700,000. A place in the final will bring €2m worth of prize money for the two teams, while the winner of the competition gets another million.
- “Although the financial crisis has hit the world, UEFA has decided to raise the prize money awarded to clubs, as all contracts were signed earlier and do not expire until 2012. Apart from these sums, UEFA will grant the Champions League participants through their respective domestic associations another €341m of sponsorship money, but not everyone will get an equal share. It will be established according to a team’s position in the marketing rankings list. The biggest share will go to the teams from England, Spain, Germany and Italy. Naturally, UEFA retain the exclusive right to change this regulation if a sponsor withdraws their participation unexpectedly, but the money we mentioned will almost definitely be used for the upcoming season,” says Marko Vjetrovic. |
It is obvious at first glance UEFA has decided to increase the prize money for the teams participants of the Champions League, but also allocate bigger money for the newly-founded Europa League, for which Serbia will give at least three teams.
As for Partizan, they have ensured €200,000 worth of initial prize money from UEFA after winning the domestic title, and further €130,000 for their automatic place in the Champions League second qualifying round. If they get past the second qualifying round, the Humska club will be awarded another €130,000. According to the new system, the qualifications for the Champions League group stage do not end with the third round as before, but clubs now have to take another, play-off, phase. However, this stage stands out for its financial dimension, as the twenty teams who reach the final obstacle before the group stage will be awarded €2.1m each. - “At the insistence of some Eastern European clubs, Partizan and Dinamo Zagreb above all, the play-off has been included in the central marketing plan of the Champions League. Therefore, the prize money is substantially larger,” Parizan’s UEFA representative, Marko Vjetrovic, clarified. Reaching the fourth stage of the qualifying campaign would mean Partizan increase their bank balance by €2.46, while if they manage to go one step further and enter the main round the black-whites would win €7.1m. The system of prizing remains unchanged in the Champions League, although UEFA has increased the total prize money fund by 30 per cent. In the past three seasons in the elite club competition, a win in the group stage brought a club €600,000, a draw €300,000, while in the three following seasons, clubs will get €800,000 for every win and €400,000 for every draw.
